R.E.M announced yesterday that their 31 year run has come to an end. I’ve been on this earth almost as long as they’ve been a band. I grew up listening to them a lot. So many songs come to mind that shadow different periods of my life. Green was the first record I bought by them because I loved the song Stand. There’s a great Chicago Hotdog stand down the street from where I grew up and they had a jukebox with mostly shitty pop music, R.E.M. was one of the few select bands the box had and it had Stand and It’s the End of the World as We Know It, on it. Automatic for the People is probably my favorite album with songs like Drive, Everybody Hurts, and Man on the Moon. I used to have to beg DJ’s at middle school dances to play any of the songs off that album, and if they did the embarrassment and rejection when trying to dance with a girl I had a crush on wouldn’t matter, because I had my air guitar ready and tuned up for that Drive solo. The next album I loved was Monster. I started fiddling around with my friend’s and cousin’s guitars about this time before I got my own. I just really loved how “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth” sounded and wanted to make some noise like that. Since then the band has always stuck with me. Listening to them brings back memories of good times, like the girl who put At My Most Beautiful on a mix cd for me because we made each other smile so much our cheeks would hurt the next day, or impressing a crowd of strangers when I sang It’s the End of The World as We Know It for karaoke. My only regret is never going to see them live. Tours never seemed to happen when I was free or had money to spend. Ah well, at least it ended on good terms and there’s always great songs to listen to.

The following is from the band’s website

“To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.” R.E.M.

Arcade Fire - Wake Up

By now, you’ve likely heard of Arcade Fire. They’ve gained wonderful recognition in the past seven or so years through three critically acclaimed albums. As I slowly recover from losing all of my music due to technical problems with my computer and the device I had it backed up on, I find myself listening to music that I had been neglecting because of so many new releases that had caught my attention. While Arcade Fire’s latest musical endeavor, The Suburbs, won a Juno Award and more notably a Grammy for Album of the Year, their older music is still quite rich and well worth a listen. Wake Up is off of their 2004 LP debut, Funeral, which I hadn’t listened to as of late late until I put it back in my music library. It’s the song that made me fall in love with the band years ago.

Enjoy!

-Andrew

P.S.
I’m sure I’ll catch some flak for tagging this as indie, as some make a convincing argument that the genre doesn’t quite fit now that they’ve won a Grammy. I don’t quite care. Cheers!

On my list of top 5 favorite artists, next to M. Ward, is Andrew Bird. He’s well known for his intelligent lyrics, layering technique, unbelievable violin skills, and he is the tops at whistling. If you’ve seen him do anything live you know how fascinating it is to watch, and if you haven’t, watch this TED talk from last year. Two things I love the most about Andrew Bird:

1. He loves to improvise and feel his music. Take a look at any of the Fingerlings EPs, they’re a great example of Bird’s ability to create and just go with the music.

2. He takes simple loops and puts them on top of one another to create complex tracks. All by himself. And he improvises on the fly. This blows my mind.

Enjoy!

1. Tricep Dip in Reverse Plank x20

Get up onto your palms and heels and lift your butt off the mat, hips in line, pelvis up. Bend your elbows back as you touch your booty to the floor. Then straighten out again. MODIFICATION: Bring your heels closer to the body and bend your knees like you’re a coffee table.

2. Chest Press Pulses x30

Keeping your elbows together, simply pulse up! You will soooooooo feel this one in your chest without even try! One of my favorite moves in the world.

3. Pushup x10

You can do this on your knees or toes. Make sure you keep your eyes forward. DO NOT look underneath you!

4. Cobra Pushup x10

Begin in plank. Pretend there is a limbo pole right in front of you head. Slither your head underneath it…followed by your back, your butt, and your legs before you gull push up. MODIFICATION: Make the limbo stick higher :) If you’re having trouble, see my video on Advanced Pushup Variations.

5. Inverse Shoulder Press (Pushup) x10

Get into downward dog. Then scoot your hands closer to your legs. Look back at the toes. Now do a pushup and touch the top of your head to the mat. See demonstration video here. MODIFICATION: Don’t bring your hands so close to your feet.

6. One-Legged Cobra Pushup x10

Same as cobra pushup but one leg up! Do 10 on each side.

If you have any questions about the different types of pushups and how they look, please see my video on Advanced Pushup Variations.
